I have been living and loving storytelling since I was a child. Back then I made my first movies with my dad' s VHS camcorder. I could never get enough of the fascination of creating something real from something artificial (which film sets are). Bringing emotions through video and audio to life is what makes me happy..
Coming to the set in the morning, answering thousands of questions at the same time and,
especially in independent productions, having to take on so many positions yourself.
My solution: Just do it step by step. Answer every question immediately. It doesn' t matter if it was correct or not. Don' t be grumpy because nobody forces you to make movies.
After two seasons of a mystery series called "Ebersberg" and my first feature film "Day X", I wrote the scripts for the third season of "Ebersberg". In the hope of finding sponsors, we produced a mood trailer especially for them to show the direction in which the new story is going and how the look has improved.
I take over some actors from my last films. If the role fits and the collaboration was good, then that makes sense. But I also find them through a German casting portal and write to them specifically. I never do tenders. In the bigger productions, I always do a table read and respond to the actors' ideas on set. I treat their ideas as I treat all ideas that come to me. What I like I take over, what I don't, f*** it.
Set Design, lighting, credible casting and credible sound effects are more important than camera, resolution and gimbals. That was the technical side. Otherwise, what counts: story is king. Does your story has ups and downs in terms of tension. Do your characters have depth? If so, it should be entertaining.
In Germany we have film funds, but you can only get the big budgets with a cooperation of a large production company. It would be great if there were more producers or companies dedicated to some kind of "middle-budget" film. There are a lot of talented filmmakers and actors out there, but they keep going down next to the top dogs.
Try to learn as much as you can about all the unions involved in filmmaking. Those who have an overview are prepared and only those who are prepared can plan their projects well enough to succeed. And I am not talking about cinematic releases or money. Success is, when you completed your movie and don' t have to disappoint your cast & crew.
