Why is filmmaking important to you and how has your life been influenced by it?

 John:

From everyday references with friends to important times in my life, there was always a show or film I was watching to go along with it. But really, seeing family laugh and enjoy my work is all that really matters.

As a filmmaker, what is the greatest obstacle you have faced and how have you adapted or solved it?

 John:

My lack of knowledge in the technical aspects as this was my first time filming, editing, and color grading.

Can you tell us a little about your new movie and what motivated you to create it?

John:

This movie is based on an actual moment that happened to me, but I'm playing a mix of my mother and brother. I'd gotten to a point in my life where it felt like I was stalling creatively, so I thought to myself - I need to stop waiting for someone to give me permission to create. When the pandemic hit and I had nothing but time, I gave myself the permission I needed.

How did you find your cast and crew and how did you maintain a strong relationship with them on set?

John:

I play opposite my nephew. The only kid nearby during the height of the shutdown. ...There will be more to come, but I haven't yet cast future roles.

What qualities do you think make for a good film?

 John:

Good films show all characters (down to the very minor ones) having strong points of view, show each frame as a portrait and don't waste a single moment. Add that up with a universally relatable story and you have a good film!

If you could change one thing about the current film industry, what would it be?

 John:

How people treat each other. There will always be a totem pole, but the people at the top should remember where they started and respect those who are working their way up.

What advice would you give to someone who wants a career in filmmaking?

John:

Just start! I know it sounds simple and trite, but it's the truth. Get on set, see how things are done and observe the mechanics. Mimic others and watch as your voice develops.
